The Academic Female Choir of Tartu University, Estonia, was founded in 1945 by Richard Ritsing. Since 1963 the chief conductor has been Vaike Uibopuu. Assisting the rehearsals are also choir-master Ene Ahven and tuner Viviane Kallaste. Epp Hansberg has been working from 1988-2004 as pianist. The majority of the choir's 43 members are student and graduates of Tartu University and of Tartu H. Eller Music School.
The choir performs music from different periods and countries – ranging from classical to modern. A particular place in the repertuare is held by Estonian composers such as Veljo Tormis, Ester Mägi, Gustav Ernesaks, Arvo Pärt etc. Recording music from these Estonian composers has also been one of the missions of the choir. The choir has performed numerous symphonic-choral works such as “Carmina Burana” by C. Orff, “Requiem” by G. Faure, “Stabat Mater” by G. B. Pergolesi, “Mass Sancti Aloysii” by M. Haydn etc. Among the favourite composers of the choir are also contemporary composers F. Poulenc, K. Nysted, E. Rautavaara etc.
The choir has very successfully taken part in numerous international choir competitions and has received several awards. At home the choir has taken part in all National Song Festivals and Baltic Countries’ Student Song Festivals, held once every four years, as well as national competitions, where the choir has received several awards.
Being the oldest and best known of the choirs at Tartu University, the Female Choir often sings at various events of the university as well as has concerts outside. Annually about 10-15 concerts and auditions are given for different audiences.
